So, most people assume that I am a huge sports fan, because I am such a loyal fan of my Philadelphia Eagles and a pretty big geek for the National Football League. Aside from that, I really don’t care for sports. I LOVE professional football, and I LIKE football (or for the douche bag Europeans, ‘gridiron’) in just about any other form it exists, but most other sports just don’t interest me at all. One sport in particular, is Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA.
It’s not that I necessarily dislike the sport, at least no more than any other sport that’s out there. I just really don’t find anything about it that appeals to me. My friends are all somehow blown away by my lack of interest in the sport, and for some reason I’m treated as an outcast for not enjoying the sport. In fact, after being coaxed into attending the Ortiz/Griffin fight at Hooters, I walked away with even less interest in the event. I’ve been to parties where watching a UFC event was the focal point, and had fun. But, I usually have more fun doing other things at these events, and paid little attention to the sport on the TV. I don’t find interest in two men beating the shit out of each other, especially when half of the time they end up on the ground and are in the missionary position with their legs wrapped around each other.
Now, I realize the ‘strategy’ involved in the sport, and how the fighting styles don’t always mesh, and yadda, yadda, yadda. I’m not here to start a internet fight with MMA fan, or to listen to people explain to me why I should like MMA, because I will not listen and will not be a fan. It’s not for a lack of trying, or that I haven’t attempted to see the appeal. When I watch MMA, I become instantly bored and attempt to find something else to do, which at MMA events leaves me relegated to my Blackberry’s internet service for entertainment.
So, I left the event last night actually a little angry because everyone was just concerned that I wasn’t as enthralled as them. Apparently the idea of Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin punching each other in the face and kicking each in a manner that resembles two people trying to reach each other from just out of arms reach should just be so incredibly engrossing.
Sorry, I will just add MMA to the ever growing list of sports that I don’t find entertaining. Just give me football and I’ll be fine. Thanks, everyone! But please, don’t invite me to your MMA parties, or to “watch the fights,” or anything like that. No offense, I do appreciate the offer to hang out, and drink, and all that. But, it’s not my crowd, not my thing, and it’s not going to be. I’m all set! MMA, do your thing. I’ll be over here!
